Yale Divinity School is extremely proud that one of our own, Riess Potterveld ’69 B.D., has been elected President of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley California.

An alumnus of Trinity College, Dr. Potteveld has been the GTU’s acting president since July 1st, 2013, and he was elected in a unanimous vote by the GTU’s board members on June 20th, 2014.

After graduating from Yale in 1969, he earned his PhD from the Claremont Graduate University in 1982, with a  focus on the philosophy of religion and process theology.

Dr. Potterveld went on to teach at Cal State University in Northridge, and also served as a minister at the Claremont Congregational Church and later the Congregational Church of Northridge.  In 1986 he co-founded and was president of the Valley Shelter, a nonprofit shelter devoted to homeless women and children.

He held several administrative and fund-raising posts at the Pacific School of Religion before becoming the President of Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2002.  From there he returned in 2010 to the Pacific School of Religion to serve as its President.

YDS and the GTU have strong ties to one another; from one coast to the other our two schools are proud to share many of the same graduates, and a firm commitment to ecumenism.  Dr. Potterveld’s Presidency of the GTU is an exciting new chapter in the story of YDS alumni who bring faith and intellect together to make the globe a better place.

Congratulations Dr. Potterveld!
